Free Donuts and a Touch of History

It's finally here, the day I've been waiting for. It's National doughnut day! As if we need any excuse to eat those fabulous sweet fried treats.

National doughnut day (always the first Friday in June) honors the Salvation Army ladies that volunteered in WWI. On the front line in 1917, the first Salvation Army donut was served. It was most likely cooked in oil inside the metal helmet of an american soldier. These brave women were often on the front line serving up food, and some much needed morale.

So in honor of this special day make sure to treat yourself to a sweet pastry with a hole in the middle. Low on cash? You can still take part in the festivities. Dunkin Donuts will give you one free donut with the purchase of any beverage. Participating Krispy Kreme stores will give one free donut per person. Make sure to check your favorite local donut shop for any other offers.

Have a yummy day!
